GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) – With shoppers going to stores online and in person, the state attorney general’s office is warning of scammers who take advantage of those who check their wishlists.

No matter where consumers shop, state attorney general Dana Nessel encourages them to use a credit card. She explains that it generally offers protections, giving consumers a better chance of recovering money lost or stolen in a fraudulent transaction.

“You can actually get your money back most of the time,” Nessel said. “If you’re using a debit card or if you’re using some sort of cash payment app, you won’t have that kind of opportunity.”

As the holidays mark the season for giving, Nessel warns of crooks attempting to impersonate charity when asking for contributions.

“You want to make sure that this charity is actually registered with the state of Michigan,” Nessel explained. “You can ask questions like ‘What is your name, address, phone number for your organization? What is your registration number? They should have all of this information. If they don’t, please don’t even consider giving to that particular charity. It’s probably some kind of scam.
